There is at least one company in the San Diego area that offers "trolley tours". Basically, you pay a fee, which was too rich for my blood on this trip, and for that fee you get commentary as the trolley is chugging along through town and on/off privileges at each stop. On the day that we chose as our "big day out", the thought of trying to find - and pay for - parking at each location we wanted to visit filled me with dread.
Instead, we opted to pay the couple bucks in fare and ride the
San Diego Trolley. While we didn't get the running commentary, we did get convenient transportation to each of our destinations and on/off privileges. My kids enjoyed the trolley, and we will definitely plan on using this public transportation again in future visits.
